Director of External Trade Barrett Salato and Chamber of Commerce CEO Jerry Maiki Tengemoana held a constructive discussion on Monday afternoon to clarify misunderstandings between their organisations in recent media statements.
During the meeting, they reaffirmed their good working relationship in addressing trade development in Solomon Islands. They also committed to working together to ensure that the private sector’s interests are reflected in trade policy and that they are adequately consulted on issues that affect them. Both parties agreed that supporting the private sector should be a critical feature of trade agreements and that close collaboration is necessary to achieve the best outcomes for Solomon Islands.
Furthermore, Mr.Salato and Mr.Tengemoana also agreed to explore the possibility of working together in improving the labour mobility schemes managed by the Department of Trade where there is promising potential for collaboration. The Chamber will investigate how they can support returning workers in better managing their finances and investing in or starting up enterprises through the various business support programs that the Chamber has to offer.Both parties agreed to continue work together to ensure that the private sector will benefit as PACER Plus negotiations move forward.
