Women delegates at the forum
SUMITOMO Metal Mining Company (SMM) Solomon Islands says women involvement in decision making is a valuable approach.
Director Toshiaki Maeda said women, especially in Isabel, should have equal rights and opportunities to have their say in whatever is best in their perspective for development of their land.
Mr Maeda stated this during the three day minning consultation in Buala, Isabel, last week.
He noted that Isabel practices the matrilineal system where women have authority over the land, not the men.
“We are at SMM SI are willing to sit down and listen to what women have to say with regards to development,” Mr Maeda said.
During the consultations, women’s groups in Isabel were given the opportunity to speak their concern and ask valuable questions on the pros and cons of mining.
Mr Maeda said since time was not of the essence, on their perspective SMM SI welcomes more dialogue with women’s groups in Isabel and possibly their other tenement areas.
“SMM SI thinks that women have the right to express their concerns and we value the optimism of women as same to men and therefore we are glad that women were also given the opportunity to present their concerns during the consultations,” Mr Maeda said.
